The Durban ICC honours Madiba’s legacy
In honour of the late iconic statesman Dr Nelson Mandela and the values that he stood for, the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) refurbished an Early Childhood Development Centre and pre-primary school in Inanda on 17-18 July 2019 as a way of giving back to those less fortunate.
The Durban ICC also donated baby mattresses and planted a vegetable garden at the Rejoice Daycare Centre and Egugulethu Pre-Primary School in order to provide a self-sustainable source of food for the children.
The Rejoice Daycare and Egugulethu Pre-Primary School is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that relies on funding and donations in order to provide quality education to young children. The NPO was among the 164 organisations who had submitted their request for sponsorship proposal to the Durban ICC earlier this year.
Durban ICC Chief Executive Officer, Lindiwe Rakharebe, said it was important to honour Nelson Mandela’s life’s work through making an impact in people’s lives which makes the world a better place.
“The freedom that we enjoy today is as a result of the sacrifices made by anti-apartheid stalwarts such as Tata Madiba; therefore by helping those in need we help keep his legacy alive. Refurbishing the Rejoice Daycare and Egugulethu Pre-Primary School does not only show our commitment to community upliftment, but it allows us to help create a conducive learning environment for children and ensure that pupils in underprivileged communities have access to quality education,” added Rakharebe.
Egugulethu Pre-Primary School Grade R Teacher Nombulelo Ndlela, expressed her gratitude to the Durban ICC for the kind gesture.
“We are thankful to the Durban ICC for refurbishing the school’s outdoor play equipment, the children’s toilets and the Grade R classroom. We are also grateful for the vegetable garden and new gardening material as well as the donation of food and baby mattresses for the children which had been on our wish list for a while,” said Ndlela.
