DURBAN ICC HOPES TO CLINCH TITLE AS WORLD’S LEADING CONVENTION CENTRE
The Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) is on the final straight and is going all out to convert its nomination into winning the title of World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre 2021 on the World Travel Awards.
Durban ICC is the only convention centre nominated for this category in Africa. World Travel Awards (WTA) has opened voting for the prestigious World categories of its 2021 programme until 24th October 2021.
The winners will be unveiled at WTA’s Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2021, which will take place in Moscow, Russia on 26 November 2021 with the leading decision-makers, figureheads and influencers of travel in attendance. The WTA, also known as the “Oscars of the travel industry”, is currently celebrating its 28th anniversary.
Nominees feature the winners of WTA’s regional categories (Europe, Asia, Oceania, Middle East, South America, Central America, North America, Africa, Indian Ocean & Caribbean) going head-to-head for the highest accolade in the industry.
Travel industry professionals, the media and consumers worldwide are invited to cast their votes for travel brands – such as Durban ICC – that they consider to be the very best in the world. The nominee gaining the most votes in a category will be named as the winner.
Nominees this year cover a broad spectrum of categories including Aviation, Tourist Attractions, Car Hire, Cruise, Destinations, Hotels & Resorts, Meetings & Events, Travel Agencies and Tour Operators.
Durban ICC has been nominated in the World Travel Awards – Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre 20 times and has been voted the winner in this category no fewer than 17 times.
Lindiwe Rakharebe, Chief Executive Officer, Durban ICC, said the convention centre had worked diligently to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and maintain business continuity as far as was possible under the dire circumstances.
She said the Durban ICC met all its performance targets and exceeded targets in many instances.
“While we are thrilled to have been nominated, thus affirming our commitment to world-class service excellence, being the only convention centre nominated for this category in Africa, makes it all the more exciting.
“We are hoping to win the global award in this category as it will raise Durban’s destination profile for business tourism and will help the Durban ICC to attract more international events to the city. This will create more jobs and generate positive economic impact for KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa.
“Winning awards is a visible demonstration of all the behind-the-scenes hard work from the Durban ICC teams and people whose principal focus is to continuously provide world-class customer service to clients, both local and international.
“It is for this reason that the close-knit team strives to maintain the Durban ICC strong inherent culture of warmth and hospitality that we are known for and strives to ensure that each guest leaves the Durban ICC happy and satisfied with the service received,” said Rakharebe.
The WTA brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which others aspire to.
