Durban ICC injects billions to South Africa’s economy

It has been a very busy year for the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC), with the Centre hosting some of the African continent’s most prestigious meetings and conferences.

In order to accurately quantify the significant impact the Centre has on the local and national economies, an independent research study conducted by BDO, an international accounting firm, revealed that over the past financial year the Durban ICC contributed R6.39-billion to South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The majority of the Durban ICC’s economic contribution benefitted the KwaZulu-Natal GDP during the year to the tune of R6.2-billion.

From a job creation perspective, a total of 14 289 people were employed in the country as a result of the Durban ICC’s activities. In the 2018/19 fiscal year, 8 556 people were employed directly and a further 5 733 people were employed indirectly as a result of events hosted at the Centre.

The Centre Is committed to attracting meetings and conferences that will have long lasting impact through ensuring that the event drive economic growth, create jobs and skills development in the country.

The Durban ICC’s contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product over the past thirteen years has exceeded R46-billion. This is an outstanding achievement which bears testament to the Centre’s commitment to attracting events and conferences that drive economic growth in the City, Province and Country.

In this Edition of Sanibonani, we will highlight some of the international events the Centre is preparing to host later in the year; most of which will bring positive socio-economic spin-offs and cement Durban’s position as the world’s mega events and tourism destination of choice.

The Durban ICC is more than a venue but it is a platform for meetings, a facilitator of dialogue and a place for people to connect, debate and ultimately find common ground.

With the awareness that we have about the power of events, we have recognised that the Durban ICC has an important role to play in bringing together national and international leaders to engage on issues of national importance.

The realisation of the importance of events in society has made us change the way we do business. We have therefore taken a bold move of creating our own events which will benefit society at large.
On 19 September 2019, we will be hosting our inaugural Durban ICC Leadership Summit Featuring Bishop TD Jakes. Bishop TD Jakes is a renowned evangelist, author and successful businessman.

This cutting-edge Leadership Summit brings together thought-leaders, religious leaders from different faiths and denominations, captains of industry, government and civil society who will engage matters of national importance in order to develop solutions that will address the challenges we face as a country by introducing new strategies and drive collaboration across all sectors.

This high-profile event seeks to develop future leaders in business, ministries and society.
