Durban ICC Empowers the Girl Child

In May this year, the Durban ICC joined the eThekwini Municipality in hosting a group of young ladies for the annual “Take a Girl Child to Work Day” program.

The initiative is a corporate social investment undertaking, held in South Africa for the past fifteen years aimed at investing in female learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The objective of the campaign is to give the learners the opportunity to visit a place of work and experience first-hand, the “world of work” and various career opportunities available in the industry and within the public and private sectors.

The Durban ICC presented all six of its departments, taking the young ladies through each department’s role and responsibilities and what skill set would be needed in order to pursue a career in that particular field. After the various presentations they had an opportunity to sit down for a Question and Answer session with the Centre’s management team and the day ended off with a site tour of the facility.

As part of the programme the two influential business women in the city, Ms Lindiwe Rakharebe CEO of the Durban ICC and Ms Stella Khumalo CEO of uShaka Marine World also spoke to the young girls giving them valuable business insights and the values they need to carry to becoming successful in their chosen career path.
